Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
